A few years ago, a traveler posted in the Bahamas Reddit community asking for vacation help. The thread (r/bahamas – “Bahamas Vacation Help”) was full of solid advice at the time: mix in beach days, don’t overspend on lodging, and plan excursions wisely.
But between 2021 and 2026, Nassau has changed — especially when it comes to short-term rentals.
If you’re planning a trip now, here’s what still works… and what you should rethink.
What Worked in the Past (2021–2023)
Booking an affordable Airbnb in Nassau
Spending most of your budget on one “big” excursion
Choosing a luxury resort for the full experience
Planning loosely and figuring things out once you arrive
Back then, short-term rentals were fewer and quality was more consistent.
Today? It’s a mixed bag.
What’s Changed (2024–2026)
There has been a huge shift in Nassau’s rental market. Many new hosts entered the B&B/Airbnb space quickly — and unfortunately, not all are hospitality professionals.
Recent issues visitors have faced:
Units too exposed to the road (privacy concerns)
Plumbing problems
Poor housekeeping
Misleading online photos
Hosts unresponsive once you arrive
Properties located in areas not ideal for tourists
I recently met a couple who left Nassau early because their rental was not what they expected — dirty bathrooms, unmade beds, uncomfortable surroundings. They booked online based on photos and reviews.
That’s the risk today.
Cheap Hotels vs BnB’s in Nassau (Real Comparison)
✅ Budget Hotels (Smart Base Strategy)
Examples:
Courtyard by Marriott Nassau Downtown/Junkanoo Beach
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Nassau
Why this works now:
Walking distance to Junkanoo Beach
Walk to Arawak Cay (authentic Bahamian food)
Grocery store, pharmacy, liquor store nearby
Predictable cleanliness standards
24-hour front desk
No “surprise” plumbing issues
You save money on lodging — and use it where it actually matters:
✔ Swimming pigs ✔ Snorkeling reefs ✔ Turtle encounters ✔ Jet ski adventures ✔ ATV & buggy tours ✔ Harbor tours of celebrity homes ✔ Island hopping trips
Face it — you’ll spend most of your day on the beach or on excursions. Most guests are only in their rooms to shower and sleep 6–7 hours.
Why overspend on a luxury room you barely see?
⚠️ BnB / Airbnb (When It Can Work — and When It Doesn’t)
May work if:
Small group (1–3 adults)
You personally verify host reputation
You understand the neighborhood
You’re okay with some unpredictability
Risky if:
Family with kids
Special occasion trip
First time in Nassau
Tight schedule
Too many travelers spend heavily on luxury resorts like Atlantis Paradise Island or Baha Mar and then realize they’re gone all day anyway.
The only luxury property I consistently recommend for value + walkability is Margaritaville Beach Resort Nassau — because of its central location and access.
The Smarter 2026 Strategy
Book a clean, affordable hotel.
Walk to the beach anytime.
Use saved money on premium excursions.
Have a local contact who knows which operators are solid.
I’ve built websites and TripAdvisor profiles for many operators here. I know who delivers quality and who shouldn’t be in tourism.
Good operators protect their reputation. Bad ones hope you never come back.
Why a Local Concierge Changes Everything
Example:
A couple recently wanted pink sand from Harbour Island for their anniversary. The wife collects sand — she already had black sand from Puerto Rico and wanted pink sand from the Bahamas.
The problem?
Winds picked up. Luxury boat trips ($500 per person) were canceled. They didn’t know there’s an affordable ferry running on weekends.
If they had contacted me beforehand, I would have:
Booked a backup ferry option
Scheduled the pink sand visit before the anniversary
Created a weather contingency plan
Instead, they missed it entirely.
That’s the difference between hoping everything works… and having someone with their ear to the ground.
What You Gain by Planning Smarter
✔ More experiences ✔ Less stress ✔ Backup plans ✔ Insider pricing ✔ Someone who can fix problems quickly ✔ Better special occasions
I offer:
Free custom itinerary
$150 island hopping deals (normally $200)
Operator recommendations at best price
$50/day concierge for full-service support
$50 flat for micromanaging one special day (anniversary, birthday, wedding)
When it comes to milestone moments, you shouldn’t be negotiating with boat captains.

Final Thought
The Reddit advice was right about one thing:
Don’t waste money where it doesn’t matter.
In 2026, that means: Skip the risky BnB. Skip overspending on luxury rooms. Invest in experiences. Have someone local in your corner.
The Original Tommy Bahama is a living legend bringing confidence, culture and cuisine to visitors of the Bahamas for for than 20 years.

Snorkeling, the “Holy Grail” of a BahamasUpClose.com Vacay.
Let’s say we have a family of six from France on vacation in the Bahamas. The kids want water sports. Dad wants to fish. Mom wants to sit on the beach all day and do nothing. The grandparents want a culinary and historic tour. They all want to snorkel.
Who’s going to make this happen to everyone’s satisfaction? A Bahamas Up Close ‘n’ Personal Vacay Concierge that’s who!
And how do they achieve this without the kids being bored or the grandparents having to walk in the hot sun or mom feeling overburdened and dad missing out on fishing?
By guaranteeing three things:
Safety
Value
Spontaneity
Because the only way everyone is happy on vacation is if everyone is happy.
That’s what a vacation is all about: being happy, relaxed and having fun in the sun right?
+++
So how does a Vacay Concierge guarantee the first thing, Safety?
Let’s say you wake up for some parasailing and afterward decide you want to jet ski as well. It’s not on the day’s itinerary but if that’s what you want, why not?
Sure you can take an offer from the small-time jet ski operator walking the beach or bar, propositioning tourists. But unless they are wearing a company shirt or tag, you are putting your life on the line.
And, God forbid, if anything should happen you DO NOT need the additional stress of spending the rest of the day (and quite possibly the night) filing a report at a police station. No, you didn’t come here for that.
Safety is the most important thing during your vacation. Safety is the last thing you should have to be thinking about but it’s the first thing on your Vacay Concierge’s mind.
+++
Now let’s move on to the next guarantee: Value.
A Bahamas Up Close ‘n’ Personal Vacay Concierge has their ear to the ground so you can do anything and everything you want for the best price and the best value.
While tour operators might promise you much and deliver little at a high price (assuming you won’t be in town next week) they would never do such a thing with your local Vacay Concierge. He or she knows well the reputation of any given company and which operators never risk a bad review. Speaking of which..
Ask about our additional virtual and online services.
A Bahamas Up Close ‘n’ Personal Vacay Concierge removes hassles. No more research…no more haggling… “Just tell us what you want, what you are willing to pay and we will do the rest, keeping you informed along the way.”
+++
Let’s cover the third guarantee: spontaneity.
It’s your vacation. You’re gonna see a lot of sights, hear a lot of things. Both your mood and mind could change on a dime. Even if you have your vacation meticulously planned down to a Tee, it can all change either because of the weather, or because you stayed up last night drinking or because you woke up this morning and just felt like hitting the beach, doing nothing all day.
You don’t want to be hassled with a cancellation fee or miss a refund phone call and then end up being overcharged because you didn’t have time or energy.
No way! Let your Vacay Concierge handle all this for you with charm, wit and efficacy. Our coordination and orchestration is your dream vacay.
So next time you want to go on vacation in the Bahamas, not only will your Vacay Concierge make sure you get the best services for the best price in town, they also make sure you get it when you want it and how you want it, even if you want it within a few minutes, God willing, weather and life permitting.
The cherry on top of all of this is versatility.
There’s an experienced Vacay Concierge for seemingly everything at BahamasUpClose.com.

A: Yes, pigs in Nassau are tame and well trained. There are no booty biting pigs in Nassau. An instructor will walk you through the process. They will give you apple bits in a cup on a skewer, you will go out into the ocean waist deep and the pigs will swim to you in order to be fed. Alternatively you can feed them on the beach. Its your vacay, your way.. Always follow your guide’s instructions, make sure you hold the skewer on the side so as not to poke any piggie eyes out or hurt their snouts. Also be careful to make sure their razor sharp hooves don’t step on your salt water softened toes!
Q: What should I bring on a pig swimming tour?
A: Essentials include sunscreen, towels, swimwear, and a waterproof camera. Some tours provide snorkeling gear, but check in advance.
Q: Can I feed the pigs?
A: Most tours allow feeding under supervision. Stick to approved foods provided by your guide to ensure the pigs’ health.
Q: What’s the best time of year for pig swimming?
A: The Bahamas enjoys great weather year-round, but November to April offers the most comfortable temperatures and least chance of rain.
Conclusion:
Swimming with pigs in Nassau is a bucket-list experience that combines the beauty of the Bahamas with the unique charm of these aquatic oinkers. Whether you’re seeking luxury, adventure, or family fun, there’s a pig swimming tour perfect for you. The phenomena and history of swimming pigs in the Bahamas is quite fascinating.
Many a century ago, pirates seeded these islands with chickens, goats and pigs in the event that they were shipwrecked or beached (banished) for disobeying Captain’s orders.
And so every time pirates returned to these islands they were often met by swimming pigs. and this is how the phenomenon of swimming pigs in the Bahamas began.
In the last decade or so most visitors could not afford to go to Exuma or Eleuthera for a full day swimming pig trip which can cost up to $500. A price well worth it too. For that, you get a full day excursion of pigs, stingrays, iguanas, sharks and lunch.
This led to tour operators coming up with a cheaper alternative, particularly for pregnant ladies who can’t make the bumpy 3 hour family island boat trip and cruise ship passengers who have limited time. For about $120-$250 you visit nearby cays such as Rose Island, Pearl island and Atoll for a swimming Pig Excursion.
Depending on the tour operator this half-day trip may also include lunch, drinks, snacks, snorkeling and also wonderful beach time with family and friends.
Specifically, when you have a pig encounter, a pig handler will walk everyone through the procedure. They also supply you with apple bits in a cup on a skewer, you will then go out into the ocean waist deep and the pigs will swim to you in order to be fed.
There are no booty biting pigs near Nassau, however the pigs on the family Islands, having been there for generations with no one to care, train or feed them; are often sunburned, thirsty for fresh water and starving.
I’ve often been told that you have to hold your hands up in the air when you’re around these pigs because if you have your hands down they will assume that you have food and being hungry they will bite you. Of course that’s not always true. But it’s important to remember that nature is not your playground and when you are out in the wild, well…wild things can happen.
No booty biting pigs in Nassau!
I’m quite sure we’ve all seen posts from various Instagram girls who went to Exuma and got a little too friendly with a wild pig. The result: a booty bite from Bahamas wild pigs on the beach.
In Nassau I’ve heard people who grew up on a pig farm say they hated feeding pigs as a child and now they can’t believe as an adult, here they are paying to feed pigs and yet they always find it unbelievably satisfying.
To see happy free range pigs running around, with their floppy ears and cork tail screw tails happily wagging. It’s a sight to behold. They’re very friendly as well as intelligent, more so than dogs.
Nassau pigs love to frolic with the tourists and look forward to encounters every day, often twice or three times per day.
One standout thing I’ve noticed is that tourists often don’t even want to swim with pigs. On most occasions they just want to feed them on the shore. So if you have a water phobia and you don’t want to go in the water, no worries, you can still have fun with swimming pigs. No swimming required.
We all know that the Bahamas, with its stunning turquoise waters, powdery white sand beaches, and abundant marine life, is a paradise for families seeking adventure and relaxation.
So any family planning a trip to this tropical haven, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy, both on land and at sea.
From swimming with pigs and snorkeling with turtles to thrilling watersports and cultural tours, the Bahamas offers something for everyone. At Bahamas Up Close, families can easily book a wide range of activities to make their vacation truly unforgettable.

Sunset Cruises and Pirate Adventures:
As the day winds down, families can unwind and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of a Bahamian sunset on a sunset cruise. Set sail aboard a luxurious catamaran or speedboat and watch as the sky is painted in hues of orange, pink, and purple — a truly magical experience for all ages.
For a more immersive adventure, embark on a pirate-themed harbour tour complete with swashbuckling entertainment, treasure hunts, and pirate-themed activities.
For those who prefer to stay dry while still experiencing the wonders of the underwater world, glass bottom boat rides offer the perfect solution. Cruise over vibrant coral reefs and observe colorful fish, sea turtles, and other marine life through the glass bottom of the boat — a fascinating experience for budding marine biologists and nature enthusiasts alike.
Additionally, families can enjoy a variety of other activities such as fishing charters, island hopping excursions, and cultural experiences showcasing the rich heritage of the Bahamas.
In conclusion, the Bahamas offers endless opportunities for family fun and adventure, from swimming with pigs and snorkeling with turtles to thrilling water sports and cultural tours.
